The northern regions of Chhattisgarh are currently in the grip of a sharp winter spell, with the local meteorological department forecasting cold and dry conditions over the coming days. Residents can expect isolated cold wave situations in parts of the area within the next 24 hours, followed by a slight moderation in the chill.
Mercury Plummets Across Northern Districts
The intensity of the cold was starkly evident on Monday night when Mainpat in Surguja district recorded a minimum temperature of just 2°C. This reading underscores the severe winter conditions prevailing in the Surguja division. According to the latest weather bulletin, Ambikapur registered the state's lowest minimum temperature at 4.8°C.
Other weather stations in north Chhattisgarh also reported below-normal night temperatures. Pendra Road saw the mercury drop to 6.8°C, while Bilaspur recorded a minimum of 11°C. In contrast, daytime temperatures across the region have remained moderate, generally hovering between 25°C and 28°C.
Dry Spell and Gradual Warming Expected
Meteorologists have indicated that dry weather is likely to prevail across the entire state, encompassing both north and central Chhattisgarh. No rainfall activity is predicted for the next few days. However, the forecast warns that cold wave conditions may still occur at one or two places in the northern and central districts, particularly during the night and early morning hours.
A key prediction from the weather department is a gradual increase of 2–3°C in minimum temperatures over the next five days. This suggests the current intense cold spell will ease slightly, but typical winter conditions will persist. The department has also advised of the likelihood of morning mist or shallow fog in pockets, especially in low-lying areas, which could reduce visibility for early-morning commuters.
Precautions Advised for Sensitive Regions
With the tribal and forested belts of north Chhattisgarh being particularly sensitive to temperature fluctuations—affecting both agriculture and daily life—authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions. People are advised to protect themselves from cold exposure, especially during the late night and early morning periods when temperatures are at their lowest.
The combination of cold wave conditions and potential morning fog necessitates heightened awareness for those venturing out early. While a slight rise in temperatures is on the horizon, the winter chill is set to continue its presence across the region for the foreseeable future.
