Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has stated that climate change is rendering Himalayan states increasingly susceptible to cloudbursts. He made these remarks while addressing a high-level meeting on disaster management in Shimla.
Rising Frequency of Cloudbursts
The Chief Minister highlighted that the frequency and intensity of cloudbursts in the Himalayan region have risen sharply in recent years. He attributed this trend to the changing climate patterns, which have led to erratic rainfall and extreme weather events. Sukhu noted that cloudbursts have become a major cause of loss of life and property in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Recent Disasters
Referring to recent incidents, Sukhu pointed out that cloudbursts have triggered flash floods and landslides, causing widespread damage. He mentioned that in July 2023, a cloudburst in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh resulted in several deaths and extensive destruction of infrastructure. Similar events have been reported from other parts of the Himalayas, emphasizing the urgent need for preparedness.
Government's Response
The state government has been taking proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of such disasters. Sukhu announced the establishment of a dedicated disaster response force and the installation of early warning systems in vulnerable areas. He also stressed the importance of community awareness and capacity building at the local level.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister called for a comprehensive policy framework at the national level to address the challenges posed by climate change in the Himalayan region. He urged the central government to allocate additional funds for disaster management and climate adaptation projects.
