IMD Alert: Cold Wave Grips Maharashtra & Punjab, Heavy Rains Lash Tamil Nadu
Cold Wave Hits Maharashtra, Heavy Rain in Tamil Nadu: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather warnings across India as diverse extreme conditions affect different regions simultaneously. While northern and central parts experience sharp temperature drops, southern states are battling intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

Cold Wave Conditions Intensify

Cold wave conditions have tightened their grip over Madhya Maharashtra and Punjab, bringing significantly lower temperatures to these regions. Meanwhile, the weather office has predicted dense fog in Manipur and Odisha today, potentially disrupting transportation and daily activities.

In Bengaluru, residents woke up to misty conditions with the forecast indicating a high of 23°C and a low of 18°C. The mist signals the onset of colder winds and reduced visibility during early morning hours, affecting commute patterns.

Southern States Face Stormy Weather

The southern part of the country is experiencing completely different weather challenges. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places over Karnataka today, posing risks to outdoor activities.

More seriously, the IMD has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana today. The intense precipitation could lead to waterlogging and disruption in these regions.

K Nagaratna, head of IMD Hyderabad, provided a concerning outlook for Telangana, stating, "The State is likely to experience a cold to severe cold wave in the last days of December. Temperatures less than 10 degree Celsius might be recorded in districts, particularly in Adilabad."

Precautionary Measures and Warnings

In response to the severe weather predictions, all schools, both private and government-aided, across Puducherry's four regions are closed today. Home and Education Minister A. Namassivayam announced the holiday as a precautionary measure due to heavy rains expected from Cyclone Ditwah.

The Shimla Meteorological Office has forecast rain and snow in the mid and high hills of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday and Friday (November 4–5). Additionally, a yellow warning has been issued for dense fog around parts of the Bhakra Dam reservoir in Bilaspur district and in some areas of the Balh Valley in Mandi district from today to Wednesday.

Delhi residents are experiencing an unusually cold November, with this month becoming Delhi's coldest in five years. Nighttime temperatures dropped to 8°C, the lowest in three years, while the monthly average minimum reached 11.5°C. The city's lowest temperature this year was 8°C, significantly cooler than last year's 9.5°C.

For today, the department has predicted shallow fog in Delhi. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 23°C and 25°C, while minimum temperatures will linger between 8°C and 10°C. The minimum temperatures are likely to be near normal, but maximum temperatures are expected to remain below normal by 1–2°C.
