Cyclone Ditwah Intensifies, Set for November 30 Landfall
The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into cyclonic storm Ditwah, which is expected to make landfall early morning on November 30, 2025 along the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department has issued multiple alerts as the storm approaches.
IMD Tracking and District Alerts
According to the latest IMD update, Cyclone Ditwah has been moving north-northwestwards at 7 kmph and was positioned at 23:30 hours IST on November 28 near latitude 9.0°N and longitude 80.8°E. The storm's current location places it approximately:
- 70 km northwest of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka
- 170 km northwest of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka
- 240 km south-southeast of Karaikal, India
- 350 km south-southeast of Puducherry, India
- 450 km south of Chennai, India
The IMD has placed several districts on high alert, with Tirupathi, Chittoor, Bapatla, Prakasam and SPSR Nellore districts in Andhra Pradesh under orange alert for heavy rainfall.
Travel Disruptions and Flight Cancellations
The adverse weather conditions have already begun affecting transportation, particularly air travel. Chennai International Airport has experienced flight disruptions, leading to several cancellations for November 29.
Indigo Airlines issued an official travel advisory through their social media channels, warning passengers that "flights to and from Jaffna, Pondicherry, Tuticorin, and Trichy may experience disruptions" due to the cyclonic conditions and heavy rainfall associated with Cyclone Ditwah.
Regional Impact and Reservoir Alerts
The effects of Cyclone Ditwah are being felt beyond the immediate landfall areas. In Kerala, three reservoirs in Idukki district have been placed on red alert due to rapidly rising water levels caused by the continuing rains. Additionally, reservoirs in Thrissur and Kozhikode districts are under orange alert.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued warnings to citizens about expected heavy rainfall in the wake of the cyclone, urging people to take necessary precautions and stay updated with official weather bulletins.
As Cyclone Ditwah continues its path toward the Indian coastline, authorities across multiple states are coordinating response efforts and advising residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines issued by local disaster management authorities.
