Dehradun Activists Rally for Release of Detained Scientist Sonam Wangchuk
Social activists in Dehradun gathered at Gandhi Park on Thursday evening to stage a protest against the detention of renowned scientist and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, demanding his immediate release. The protesters emphasized that bail is a fundamental constitutional right that should be upheld.
Detention Under National Security Act Criticized
Wangchuk was detained on September 26 last year under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA). Activists in Dehradun strongly criticized this arrest, labeling it as an "attempt to silence dissent". They alleged that the central government is systematically detaining individuals who do not conform to its official narrative.
The activists pointed out that Wangchuk was branded a "traitor" after he publicly demanded that the central government fulfill its promise of implementing the Sixth Schedule in Ladakh. This constitutional provision is aimed at granting greater autonomy and protection to tribal regions.
Protesters Decry Unjust Treatment
During the protest, participants chanted slogans calling for Wangchuk's release, arguing that he has neither taken up arms nor committed any act of treason. "He was simply asking the government to honour its commitments, yet his voice was silenced," the protesters asserted.
Environmentalist and social activist Ravi Chopra highlighted the injustice of the situation, stating, "He is being kept in prison without any charges being framed against him. A world-renowned scientist and environmentalist, he has been in jail for five months simply on superficial claims of treachery. He was recognised by the government for his excellent work, he appreciated the PM also and yet he is being treated in this manner."
Broader Implications for Civil Liberties
The protest in Dehradun underscores growing concerns about the erosion of civil liberties and the suppression of peaceful dissent. Activists warned that such actions could have a chilling effect on environmental advocacy and scientific discourse in the country.
They called for a transparent legal process and urged authorities to respect constitutional rights, ensuring that individuals are not detained arbitrarily without due cause. The gathering at Gandhi Park served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom of expression in India.
