Construction activities adjacent to a sharp bend on Old Rajpur Road, located near the Rajpur Reserve Forest in Dehradun, have ignited significant concerns regarding potential encroachment on one of the city's vital remaining green spaces. Local residents have formally lodged a complaint demanding an immediate cessation of the work, highlighting severe risks to wildlife, escalating littering problems, heightened fire hazards, and possible law and order disturbances in this ecologically sensitive zone.
Residents Voice Strong Opposition to Development
Laborers present at the construction site informed sources that the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) had commissioned the project, described as part of facade development works involving the building of gazebos. This initiative has faced substantial backlash not only from the community but also across social media platforms. One resident articulated the collective sentiment, stating, "The reserve forest must be conserved to maintain air quality and control pollution. It is our constitutional duty to protect forests, rivers, and wildlife."
According to the detailed complaint filed by residents, the construction of structures such as gazebos or seating areas could significantly worsen existing environmental challenges. They argue that these developments would attract larger crowds, leading to increased waste generation and posing direct threats to both local wildlife and the surrounding ecosystem. Residents emphasized the critical ecological role of the Rajpur Reserve Forest, noting that it is home to sal trees, supports diverse wildlife populations, and functions as a crucial catchment area for the Bindal river.
Historical Context and Ongoing Environmental Efforts
While a road already traverses through the forest, local inhabitants have consistently worked to minimize environmental damage and maintain order in the area. They have expressed grave concerns that further development could result in hazardous waste accumulation and elevate the risk of devastating forest fires. Additionally, residents pointed out that the bend in question has been the site of multiple accidents in recent years, adding to the urgency of preserving the area's natural state.
In efforts to curb public disturbances, residents have coordinated with police authorities to address issues such as public drinking and related nuisances. Reenu Paul, a concerned resident, explained, "The forest stretch is already grappling with littering and misuse. Developing such a spot on the edge of the reserve forest will damage this green patch and eventually turn it into a nuisance for both residents and the local ecology."
Authorities Respond and Clarify Positions
In response to the mounting complaints, the forest department intervened and halted the construction work on Wednesday, citing that no prior permission had been obtained for the project. Meanwhile, DMC officials provided clarification, stating that only pathway development had been officially approved in selected areas, including Rajpur, Canal Road, and Chakrata Road. They explicitly denied authorizing any gazebo construction in the vicinity.
Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal stated, "We have not granted permission for any gazebo in the area. If any such structure is being developed without approval, it will be treated as unauthorised. Our teams will inspect the site and take necessary action if violations are found."
This incident underscores the ongoing tension between urban development and environmental conservation in rapidly growing regions like Dehradun, highlighting the need for stringent regulatory oversight and community engagement in protecting fragile ecosystems.
