Delhi Air Quality Plummets to Severe, GRAP Stage 3 Curbs Activated
Delhi Air Quality Severe: GRAP Stage 3 Curbs Implemented

Delhi's air quality has taken a dangerous turn, plunging into the severe category and triggering immediate emergency response measures across the National Capital Region. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has invoked Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) as pollution levels reached critical levels.

Emergency Measures Activated

The decision to implement GRAP Stage 3 restrictions came after Delhi's average Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed the 400 mark, firmly placing it in the severe category. The CAQM's emergency response includes a complete ban on non-essential construction activities and strict limitations on the operation of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles.

According to the official order, the restrictions apply to all construction and demolition activities across the entire NCR, with exemptions only for essential projects. This includes crucial national security/defense projects, healthcare facilities, and infrastructure related to public transportation.

Transportation Restrictions and Exemptions

The transportation sector faces significant constraints under the new measures. BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers are now prohibited from operating in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Budh Nagar. However, the restrictions provide specific exemptions for vehicles engaged in essential services.

Emergency vehicles, those involved in municipal services, and vehicles used for medical purposes remain exempt from the ban. The CAQM has directed the governments of Delhi and NCR states to implement these restrictions strictly and decide on additional measures such as online classes for educational institutions.

Widespread Impact Across NCR

The air quality crisis has affected multiple areas within the National Capital Region. Monitoring data revealed that several locations recorded AQI levels well above 400, with some areas reaching even more hazardous levels. The deteriorating conditions have raised serious health concerns among residents and authorities alike.

Medical experts have warned that exposure to such poor air quality can lead to immediate health issues, particularly affecting individuals with pre-existing respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. The elderly, children, and those with compromised immune systems face the highest risk during such severe pollution episodes.

The implementation of GRAP Stage 3 represents a significant escalation in the battle against air pollution in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with the possibility of further measures if air quality fails to improve in the coming days.
