Delhi Weather Update: Temperature Fluctuations Expected This Week

The national capital, Delhi, is poised to experience a minor uptick in temperatures on Monday, according to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, residents should not expect this warmth to last, as a western disturbance is set to influence the region, bringing cooler weather and precipitation in the coming days.

Recent Weather Patterns and Forecast Details

Over the weekend, Delhi witnessed partly cloudy skies with light and variable winds, which helped keep maximum temperatures below the normal range. On Sunday, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung, the base weather station, was recorded at 32.7 degrees Celsius, which is one degree below normal. This marked a slight increase from Saturday's 32 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature settled at 20.1 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal, compared to 20.7 degrees on the previous day.

Looking ahead to Monday, the IMD predicts that both maximum and minimum temperatures will hover between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius, indicating a slight rise. However, this increase is temporary, as meteorological conditions are expected to shift significantly.

Yellow Alert Issued for Rain and Gusty Winds

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday, warning of rain and gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 50 kilometers per hour towards late evening and night. This weather system is anticipated to bring temperatures down once again. As a result, the maximum temperature on Tuesday is forecast to settle around 29 to 31 degrees Celsius.

Another spell of rain is likely on Wednesday, further cooling the city. By Wednesday, the maximum temperature is expected to dip to 28–30 degrees Celsius, providing relief from the brief warm spell.

Impact of Western Disturbance on Temperature Trends

The influence of the western disturbance is a key factor in preventing any intense heatwaves or sharp spikes in daytime temperatures over the next few days. According to the IMD, a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from April 7. This will cause maximum temperatures to rise by approximately three degrees Celsius over the next two days, followed by a drop of two to four degrees on April 7 and 8, and then a subsequent rise of three to five degrees thereafter.

Overall, temperatures are expected to remain normal over the next two days and then become appreciably to markedly below normal during the subsequent three days, as per the IMD's statement.

Air Quality Remains in Moderate Category

In addition to weather updates, Delhi's air quality has shown marginal improvement. The air quality index (AQI), measured on a scale of 0 to 500, stood at 134 at 4 PM, slightly better than the previous day's reading of 135. This places the city's air quality in the moderate category, indicating that while pollution levels are not severe, residents should remain cautious, especially those with respiratory issues.

As Delhi navigates these fluctuating weather conditions, it is advisable for citizens to stay updated with the latest forecasts and prepare for potential rain and cooler temperatures midweek.
