A massive and persistent fire that erupted at the landfill site in Hosayellapur, on the outskirts of Dharwad, has been successfully extinguished after raging for nearly four consecutive days. The blaze, which triggered significant panic and health concerns among local residents, was finally brought under control on Thursday afternoon, marking a critical victory for emergency responders.
Toxic Smoke Engulfs City, Prompting Public Outcry
The fire reportedly ignited due to a dangerous chemical reaction exacerbated by extreme heat conditions at the garbage dumping yard. This led to the generation of dense, toxic smoke that engulfed approximately 50% of Dharwad, severely degrading air quality and causing widespread alarm among the citizenry. For days, residents endured thick plumes of smoke, leading to heightened fears over respiratory health and environmental contamination.
Angered by the prolonged hazardous situation, residents staged vigorous protests, demanding immediate and decisive action from civic authorities. The public pressure underscored the urgency of addressing the fire and its detrimental effects on the community's well-being.
Municipal Corporation Mobilizes Extensive Firefighting Efforts
In response to the escalating crisis, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) swiftly mobilized its resources. The corporation deployed its staff alongside dedicated fire and emergency personnel in a concerted effort to contain the relentless blaze. Firefighters worked around the clock, battling the flames continuously for nearly four days to achieve full extinguishment.
Confirming the successful operation, fire personnel announced on Thursday noon that the inferno had been completely doused, bringing a much-needed end to the emergency.
Officials Inspect Site, Commend Combined Efforts
Following the extinguishment, a delegation of key officials visited the landfill site to assess the situation. The group included Mayor Jyoti Patil, Deputy Mayor Santosh Chauhan, Floor Leader Iresh Anchatgeri, and HDMC Commissioner Rudresh Ghali. Their inspection aimed to evaluate the damage and ensure no residual threats remained.
During the visit, Floor Leader Iresh Anchatgeri highlighted the effectiveness of the collaborative response. "The combined efforts of HDMC staff and fire personnel were instrumental in bringing this challenging situation under control," he stated, acknowledging the hard work and coordination that led to the successful outcome.
With the fire extinguished, residents have heaved a collective sigh of relief as cleaner air returns to the city, ending days of environmental distress and restoring a sense of normalcy to the affected areas.
