Saudi Arabia Launches Damage Assessment After Drone Crashes into Oil Refinery
The Ministry of Defence in Saudi Arabia confirmed on Thursday that a drone crashed into an oil refinery, with damage assessment currently underway. According to reports from Al Jazeera, the incident occurred at the Samref refinery, highlighting escalating security concerns in the region.
Details of the Drone Incident and Broader Attacks
In a post on X, the Saudi Defence Ministry stated, "The official spokesperson for Ministry of Defence: A drone has fallen in the Samarra refinery and damage assessment is underway." This event follows reports of explosions near a Saudi Aramco oil facility in Riyadh on Wednesday, which were linked to ballistic missile launches from Iran.
Additionally, the Ministry of Defence mentioned that a ballistic missile targeting the port of Yanbu was successfully intercepted and destroyed. Al Jazeera breaking news reported that four missiles were intercepted by authorities, underscoring the heightened military activity.
Regional Impact and Additional Incidents
The drone attack is part of a series of security breaches affecting oil infrastructure in the Gulf. Al Jazeera also reported a fire at the Mina al-Ahmadi oil refinery in Kuwait after a drone strike, though the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation confirmed no casualties and that the fire was handled with high safety standards. Earlier, a massive fire at Qatar's Ras Laffen industrial city was contained without casualties, as per the Ministry of Interior.
Diplomatic Responses and Ministerial Meeting
Amid rising tensions in West Asia and the Gulf, foreign ministers from key Arab and Islamic countries held a consultative meeting in Riyadh to address the Iranian attacks. A statement from Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry emphasized several critical points:
- Iran must abide by Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which calls for an immediate halt to all attacks and cessation of provocative acts against neighboring states.
- Condemnation of Iranian attacks using ballistic missiles and drones that targeted civilian infrastructure, including oil facilities, desalination plants, and residential areas.
- Affirmation of the right of states to defend themselves under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
- A call for Iran to respect international law, good neighborliness, and refrain from interfering in internal affairs to achieve regional stability.
The ministers stressed that future relations with Iran depend on respecting sovereignty and non-interference, highlighting the urgent need for diplomacy to resolve the crisis. This incident underscores the volatile security situation in the region, with ongoing assessments and diplomatic efforts to mitigate further escalations.
