Tragic Elephant Attack Claims Life of Elderly Woman in Jharkhand Forest
A devastating elephant attack in a remote forest area of West Singhbhum district has resulted in the death of an elderly woman and left her brother with serious injuries. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning in the Chaibasa forest division, highlighting the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in the region.
Details of the Fatal Encounter
The victims have been identified as 60-year-old Chandu Kui and her 65-year-old brother Lakhan Kudada. According to forest officials, a herd of two adult elephants had strayed into Barkundia village in Tantnagar block late on Monday. One of the elephants, apparently attracted by the scent of fermented mahua liquor, raided a straw hut where the siblings were sleeping.
The attack unfolded with terrifying speed. Awakened by the disturbance, Chandu and Lakhan attempted to escape but found themselves face-to-face with the elephant. The animal dragged Chandu by its trunk, lifted her into the air, slammed her violently onto the ground, and then trampled her to death. When Lakhan tried desperately to save his sister, the elephant kicked him, causing multiple fractures in his right leg.
Delayed Response and Hospitalization
Due to the remote location of the hut deep within the forest, there was no immediate emergency response available when the attack occurred. Forest officials only reached the scene in the morning after receiving an alert. By then, Chandu had already succumbed to her injuries. Lakhan was rushed to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital, where he remains under medical care for his serious leg injuries.
Official Investigation and Findings
Chaibasa Divisional Forest Officer Aditya Narayan confirmed that preliminary investigations point to mahua liquor as the primary cause of the tragic incident. "Two separate filled jars of mahua and hadia were found in the house attacked by the elephant," Narayan stated. "The hut was situated remotely in the forest, isolated from immediate help from forest guards or nearby villagers when the animal struck."
Ongoing Elephant Presence and Safety Warnings
The DFO further revealed that approximately 30 elephants in separate herds have been straying through the Chaibasa forest division for the past week. This increased elephant activity has prompted forest authorities to issue urgent safety advisories to villagers living in forest areas. The protocols specifically include:
- Avoiding storage of fermented liquor in and around homes
- Maintaining safe distance from elephant herds
- Reporting elephant movements to forest officials immediately
- Following established safety guidelines during elephant encounters
This tragic incident underscores the critical need for enhanced safety measures and awareness programs in regions where human settlements intersect with wildlife habitats. Forest officials continue to monitor the elephant herds while investigating the full circumstances surrounding this fatal encounter.
