Forest Fire in Ghiroli, Gageshwar Raises Environmental and Safety Alarms
A forest fire that erupted in Ghiroli, Gageshwar, on Wednesday night has ignited significant concerns over environmental degradation and public safety. Residents have reported a noticeable increase in wildlife movement into nearby villages, highlighting the broader ecological impact of such incidents.
Recurring Fires and Wildlife Displacement
This is not an isolated event, as forest fires were previously reported from the Garur region, where extensive forest areas were affected. Local residents emphasize that these recurring fires have severely damaged the ecosystem, forcing wild animals to seek refuge in human settlements. Bablu Joshi, a local resident, stated, "Forest fires have become frequent, and the impact is clearly visible. Leopards are now entering the village regularly. In the past few days, two to three have been spotted in residential areas."
Another resident, Ashok Lohani from Jaulkande village, added that animals are moving towards villages in search of safety. In a specific incident on Thursday afternoon, a leopard was discovered hiding behind a drum on the roof of a bathroom in Leti village, underscoring the immediate dangers posed to communities.
Official Response and Local Disputes
Forest officials, however, maintain that the situation is under control. Sub-divisional officer M S Gusain reported that approximately 50 fire incidents have been recorded so far this season, noting that reserve forests have largely remained unaffected. This claim is contested by locals. Jagdish Chandra, a Garur resident, disputed this, saying, "In our area, even reserve forests have suffered significant damage."
To address the crisis, District Magistrate Akanksha Konde announced the mobilization of multiple agencies. She explained, "Apart from the forest department, tehsil-level teams and Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been deployed. Regular monitoring is being carried out in coordination with disaster management and forest officials." This coordinated effort aims to mitigate further damage and ensure public safety.
