Ghaziabad Slum Fire Spreads to Animal Shelter, Killing Seven Dogs
A devastating fire that erupted in the Kanawani slum area of Ghaziabad on Thursday spread to a small animal shelter located at the edge of the cluster, resulting in the tragic death of seven dogs and injuries to several others. The incident has highlighted the vulnerabilities of informal animal care facilities in densely populated urban zones.
Rescue Efforts Amid Flames
Chief Fire Officer Rahul Pal provided details of the harrowing rescue operation. "We heard people shouting that there were animals trapped inside," he recounted. "A team from the fire department and police broke open the gate, which was surrounded by fire. We found dogs and puppies and started rescuing them, but a few died due to burns." According to Pal, more than 70 dogs were housed at the shelter when the fire reached it, underscoring the scale of the emergency response required.
Shelter Operations and Community Impact
Vandana, an animal activist who has managed the facility for six years, confirmed that some dogs had been killed but declined to specify the number, stating, "I am not in a condition to talk more about the incident." A senior police official noted that nearby residents frequently used the shelter to house their animals, and it also provided medical treatment for sick or injured street dogs, emphasizing its role in the local community.
Concerns Over Shelter Registration
Saurabh Gupta of People for Animals announced that his organization would assess the condition of the shelter and verify whether it was officially registered. This scrutiny comes as the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation currently does not operate any dog shelter in the district, raising questions about oversight and support for such facilities.
History of Animal Tragedies in Kanawani
This incident is not the first time animals have perished in a fire in the Kanawani area. In April 2022, a fire at a cowshed-cum-dairy in the same locality resulted in the deaths of 38 cows, with around 20 sustaining severe burn injuries. More than 100 cows were present at the time. The cowshed, operated under the Shri Krishna Seva Gaushala Trust, was located adjacent to a cluster of slums, and the fire spread rapidly from a nearby scrap godown, mirroring the recent shelter fire in its origin and impact.
