Massive Crocodile Emerges Near Historic Temple in Karnataka
A large crocodile was observed on the banks of the Tungabhadra River close to the Devghat Amruteshwar Temple, situated near Gangavathi city in the Koppal district of Karnataka. The sighting occurred on Tuesday and has drawn attention to the rich wildlife presence in this region.
YouTuber Captures Rare Sighting During Community Event
The crocodile was first noticed by Vasant, a local YouTuber who visited the temple to document a community-feeding event. While exploring the riverbank, Vasant spotted the substantial reptile, highlighting how such encounters can occur unexpectedly in natural settings.
Local Residents Report Frequent Wildlife Encounters
Veeresh Ballari, a resident of the area, confirmed that sightings of wild animals are common here. He explained that the river stretch is home to various species, including crocodiles, sloth bears, wild boars, foxes, and peacocks. "Many farmers in this region have reported seeing at least three to four large crocodiles in the river," Veeresh stated, emphasizing the regular presence of these creatures.
Seasonal Changes Influence Crocodile Behavior
According to Veeresh, the river section flowing from the Devghat Amruteshwar Temple to Ballari Channappa's agricultural land in Mothighat becomes shallow during the summer months. This reduction in water levels prompts crocodiles to leave the water and bask in the sun along the banks, increasing the likelihood of human-animal interactions.
Calls for Safety Measures from Forest Department
In response to these sightings, Veeresh and local farmers have formally requested the forest department to install warning signs in the area. These signs would alert residents and visitors to the potential presence of crocodiles and other wildlife, helping to prevent accidents and promote coexistence.
The incident underscores the importance of wildlife conservation and safety protocols in regions where human activities intersect with natural habitats. As communities and authorities work together, such measures can ensure both protection for wildlife and security for people enjoying these scenic riverbanks.
