Assolda Residents Triumph as Controversial Coal Jetty Project is Withdrawn in Goa
Residents of Assolda village in Goa have achieved a major victory in their fight against a proposed coal jetty, as the project proponent has decided to withdraw the plan under mounting pressure. This decision was announced during a critical meeting of the Goa State Environment Appraisal Committee and the Environment Board held in Panaji.
Heated Confrontation Over Environmental Concerns
The meeting witnessed a tense and heated exchange between villagers and board members. Local residents strongly accused the environment department of preparing what they called a fraudulent survey report that deliberately omitted the presence of vital ecological features at the proposed site.
According to a senior officer present, villagers argued that the official report failed to document the extensive mangroves, forests, coconut groves, and agricultural fields located in the project area. They maintained that the jetty would lead to irreversible environmental degradation and pose serious public health risks, countering the proponent's claims that it would create local livelihood opportunities.
Political and Public Pressure Mounts
The development follows significant public mobilization against the project. Just days prior, a large delegation from Assolda, Curchorem, Xelvona, Hodar, and surrounding areas staged a protest at the environment department's office in Panaji. They demanded a thorough review of the jetty proposal.
This protest, which included state Congress president Amit Patkar, was triggered by the environment appraisal committee's initial recommendation to grant environmental clearance for similar jetty projects at Bag-Xelvona and Hodor. During the confrontation, protesters presented Google Maps evidence to environment director Sachin Dessai, clearly showing dense vegetation and mangroves at the site. They demanded action against officials responsible for the disputed survey.
Curchorem legislator Nilesh Cabral was also present at the decisive meeting, highlighting the political attention the issue had garnered.
Cautious Celebration Amidst Official Formalities
While the project proponent's withdrawal marks a pivotal moment, Assolda residents are proceeding with cautious optimism. Following the Friday meeting, community representatives stated they are awaiting the official minutes and a formal order before declaring a complete victory. This step ensures that the decision is properly documented and legally binding, preventing any future reversal.
The successful pushback by the villagers underscores the growing power of community-led environmental advocacy in Goa, setting a potential precedent for how local concerns over industrial development and ecological preservation are addressed by state authorities.
