Goa Family Honors Environmental Legacy with Shroud Burial
In a heartfelt tribute to environmental consciousness, a family in Pilerne, Goa, made a significant departure from centuries-old tradition on Monday. They opted for a shroud burial over a coffin for their family member, Antonia D'Souza, who passed away just six months shy of her 100th birthday. This eco-friendly decision was carried out at the cemetery of St John the Baptist Church in Pilerne, marking a poignant moment for the community.
A Tribute to Environmental Activism
The family shared a poignant message before the funeral, explaining their choice. "Mama was very environmentally conscious. She often joined us on our morchas, dharnas, and candlelight vigils to save the environment, Goa, and the planet," they stated. "As a tribute to her and her environmental legacy, we are sending mama's body back to mama earth without cutting a tree. She'll be going home to the earth in a simple, cotton bit of white cloth ... a shroud!"
To respect tradition while embracing innovation, the family arranged a coffin to transport D'Souza's body to the cemetery. However, at the gravesite, they lowered her into the ground wrapped only in cloth. The coffin, described as a common one, was intended for reuse, potentially inspiring others to adopt similar practices. "The coffin that carried her body was a common one, could later be used by someone else, or better still by many others who will be inspired by her shroud burial!" they added.
A First for the Community
Speaking to TOI, the family revealed that this was a groundbreaking experience not only for them but also for their parish and undertaker. "Mama was very pro-environment and pro-planet. She would manage her own kitchen garden when she was younger and participated in several protests against environmental destruction," they recounted, highlighting D'Souza's lifelong commitment to ecological causes.
Eco-Friendly Burial Practices Gain Traction
This event underscores a growing trend towards sustainable funeral practices. Businessman and nature lover Ashley Delaney, who has assisted in three such burials over the past five years, praised the approach. "It is a simple, dignified, and eco-friendly practice," he noted, emphasizing its benefits for reducing environmental impact compared to traditional burials that often involve resource-intensive materials like wood and metal.
The family's decision reflects a broader shift in societal values, where honoring loved ones aligns with environmental stewardship. By choosing a shroud burial, they not only paid homage to D'Souza's activism but also set an example for others to consider more sustainable end-of-life options.
