Gujarat to Build 20 Climate-Resilient Roads at Rs 1,147 Cr

The Gujarat government announced on Saturday that it will construct 20 roads across the state using climate-resilient and green technologies, with a total investment of Rs 1,147 crore. The project emphasizes sustainability by reusing materials from existing roads.

Innovative Construction Process

The construction process involves digging up the existing road surface, spreading lime, and then pulverizing and rolling the excavated material to stabilize it. After dry rolling, cement is spread over the surface. Following a seven-day curing period, a non-woven stress-absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) is laid, which is then covered with asphalt. SAMI is a high-tech fiber sheet designed to prevent cracks, absorb vehicle pressure, and extend the road's lifespan.

Adoption of Advanced Technologies

The government is also incorporating newer technologies such as the use of waste plastic and fly ash in road construction. These methods aim to enhance durability while reducing environmental impact. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable infrastructure development in Gujarat.
