Gurgaon Celebrates Cleanest Air Day in Over Five Months
Gurgaon experienced its cleanest day in 162 days on Friday, as the air quality index (AQI) plummeted to 98, marking a significant shift into the 'satisfactory' category. This milestone was last achieved on October 9 of the previous year, when the AQI was recorded at 69. The improvement comes as a relief after a prolonged period of hazardous air pollution that plagued the city throughout the winter months.
Favorable Weather Conditions Drive Improvement
The day began with an AQI of 115, which falls under the 'moderate' category. However, favorable weather conditions played a crucial role in dispersing pollutants, leading to a notable enhancement in air quality by evening. This natural cleansing effect provided residents with a much-needed respite from the toxic air that had become a persistent issue.
Varied Air Quality Across Monitoring Stations
Station-wise data revealed a mixed picture across different parts of Gurgaon. NISE Gwal Pahari recorded an impressive AQI of 67, while Vikas Sadan logged 92, both comfortably within the 'satisfactory' range. In contrast, Sector 51 reported an AQI of 135, remaining in the 'moderate' category. This variation highlights the localized nature of air pollution and the need for targeted mitigation efforts.
A Timeline of Deteriorating Air Quality
The recent improvement follows a severe winter spell characterized by consistently high pollution levels. Air quality began to deteriorate after the first week of October. By October 21, PM2.5 levels surged to 370, pushing Gurgaon into the 'very poor' category. November saw further worsening, with AQI remaining above 250 on most days, peaking at 357 on November 2 and 378 on November 11.
December continued this alarming trend, with AQI largely above 260 and multiple spikes into the 'severe' category. Notable peaks included 322 on December 13, 345 on December 15, and 364 on December 23. January emerged as the most polluted month of the season, featuring several consecutive days with AQI levels exceeding 350 and multiple peaks in the 370-390 range.
February brought only marginal relief, with air quality oscillating between 'poor' and 'very poor' categories, except for a brief dip to 148 on February 19. March began with fluctuating conditions, including several days with AQI above 300—such as 322 on March 7, 307 on March 10, 304 on March 11, and 301 on March 12—before readings dropped to 129 on March 16 and 154 on March 19, setting the stage for the sharp improvement witnessed on Friday.
Historical Context and Seasonal Patterns
The lowest air quality during this period was recorded on January 20, when the AQI touched a hazardous 394. This stark contrast to Friday's satisfactory levels underscores the volatile nature of urban air pollution, influenced by seasonal changes, weather patterns, and human activities. The improvement in late March suggests a potential shift towards cleaner air as warmer weather sets in, though sustained efforts are needed to maintain this positive trend.
As Gurgaon residents enjoy this temporary reprieve, environmental experts emphasize the importance of continued vigilance and proactive measures to combat pollution. The city's journey from severe to satisfactory air quality serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against environmental degradation and the critical role of favorable climatic conditions in providing relief.
