Massive Fire Engulfs Residential Area in Guwahati, Causing Extensive Property Damage

A devastating fire erupted late Monday night in the Bamunimaidam locality of Guwahati, near railway gate no.-6, sweeping through a densely populated residential zone and resulting in significant property destruction. The incident has left multiple families displaced and assets worth lakhs of rupees in ruins.

Emergency Response and Initial Challenges

Moononjan Ramchiary, the response team commander of the fire and emergency services, reported that the emergency call was received at approximately 10 pm, triggering an immediate dispatch from the Chandmari fire station. The first fire tender arrived at the scene by 10:06 pm, but firefighters encountered severe obstacles due to a narrow approach road, which delayed access to the affected area.

To combat the rapidly spreading flames, eight additional fire tenders were deployed from various stations across the city. The coordinated effort was crucial in containing the blaze and preventing further escalation.

Causes and Intensifying Factors

While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, preliminary suspicions point towards a potential gas leak or faulty electrical wiring. The fire quickly spread through a cluster of houses constructed with highly flammable materials, including tin sheets, bamboo, and partial concrete structures.

The situation was exacerbated by the presence of stored LPG cylinders on the premises. During the incident, six cylinders—four of 19kg capacity and two of 5kg capacity—exploded, intensifying the fire and causing additional damage to surrounding properties.

Impact on Residents and Property Losses

Fortunately, no casualties were reported as all residents managed to evacuate the area in time. However, the fire severely affected houses belonging to several individuals, including Birender Roy, Joyram Hazarika, Ram Babu Ray, Kusheshwar Ray, and Ranjit Ray.

According to the official disaster report, the total value of assets involved in the incident was estimated at Rs 15 lakh. Of this amount, assets worth Rs 13 lakh were completely destroyed, while only Rs 2 lakh worth of property could be salvaged from the wreckage.

Community and Safety Concerns

This incident highlights critical safety issues in densely populated urban areas, particularly regarding building materials and infrastructure. The use of flammable construction materials and inadequate access roads for emergency vehicles pose significant risks during such disasters.

Local authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the precise cause of the fire and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Community awareness programs on fire safety and proper storage of hazardous materials like LPG cylinders may also be emphasized.
