Haryana Heatwave Intensifies with Temperatures Soaring Above 40°C

Gurgaon recorded a maximum temperature of 41°C on Tuesday, marking a significant increase from Monday's 40°C reading. Meanwhile, Faridabad logged the state's highest temperature at 42.9°C, despite a slight 0.4°C dip in Haryana's average maximum temperature.

Temperature Trends Across Haryana

The city's minimum temperature rose to 23.5°C on Tuesday, up from 22°C the previous day. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 3-5°C over the next five to six days.

Current heatwave conditions are anticipated at isolated places in Haryana until April 24, accompanied by warm night conditions in certain areas.

Other cities in Haryana experienced similarly high temperatures:

  • Bhiwani recorded 42.5°C
  • Narnaul reached 42°C
  • Sirsa touched 41°C
  • Hisar registered 39.6°C
  • Karnal measured 39.5°C

These readings indicate widespread heat stress across the region, with temperatures approximately 1.8°C above normal according to IMD data.

Weather Forecast and Meteorological Patterns

The Met department predicts dry weather will persist over the next five days, with only isolated light rain expected later in the week. A fresh western disturbance may affect the western Himalayan region starting April 23, but its impact on Haryana is expected to be minimal.

With both daytime and nighttime temperatures rising, officials have warned of increasing heat stress, particularly in urban centers like Gurgaon and Faridabad where built-up areas tend to retain heat more effectively.

According to meteorological standards:

  1. A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40°C and is at least 4.5°C above normal
  2. If the temperature departure exceeds 6.4°C, it is classified as a severe heatwave

Health Impacts and Medical Concerns

Doctors in Delhi-NCR are already witnessing a significant surge in heat-related illnesses. Dr. Shivanshu Raj Goyal, associate director and unit head of pulmonology, respiratory and sleep medicine at Max Hospital, reported that cases have increased by over 20% in the past week.

"This rise is driven by high temperatures, dry winds, and lack of overnight relief," Dr. Goyal explained. "Patients are presenting with various symptoms including dehydration, exhaustion, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, abdominal pain, and in severe cases, heatstroke."

While many patients receive outpatient treatment, hospitalizations are increasing among vulnerable populations including outdoor workers, elderly individuals, and children.

Preventive Measures and Safety Recommendations

Medical professionals advise residents to take several precautions during this heatwave:

  • Stay adequately hydrated throughout the day
  • Avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm when temperatures peak
  • Wear light cotton clothing that allows skin to breathe
  • Use protective gear such as hats and sunglasses when outdoors
  • Keep indoor spaces cool through proper ventilation or cooling systems
  • Avoid heavy or greasy foods that can increase body heat

In case of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or elevated body temperature, immediate cooling and hydration are critical. Medical assistance should be sought promptly if the condition does not improve.

The combination of rising temperatures, urban heat island effects, and limited overnight cooling continues to create challenging conditions across Haryana, with health authorities urging residents to take the heatwave seriously and implement appropriate safety measures.
