The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Himachal Pradesh, predicting a return of heatwave conditions from May 26. The state, which witnessed some respite in the past few days, is set to experience a rise in temperatures, with mercury likely to climb 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal in the lower hills and plains.
Areas Likely to Be Affected
The heatwave is expected to impact several districts, including Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi, and Solan. The IMD has warned that these areas may see maximum temperatures touching 40 degrees Celsius or more. The yellow alert advises residents to take precautions, especially during peak afternoon hours, to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Precautions and Advisories
The state disaster management authority has urged people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and wear lightweight and light-colored clothing. Farmers have been advised to provide shade and adequate water to livestock. The IMD also cautioned that the heatwave could lead to increased water and electricity demand.
Meanwhile, the higher reaches of the state, including Shimla and Manali, are likely to remain relatively cooler, with temperatures hovering around 25-30 degrees Celsius. The weather office has predicted dry conditions across the state until the end of May, with no major weather activity expected.
Officials have also warned of an increased risk of forest fires in the lower and mid-hill regions due to dry weather and rising temperatures. Residents have been advised to report any fire incidents immediately to the forest department.
