Himachal Pradesh Weather: Snowfall in Upper Reaches, Travel Restrictions Imposed
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh witnessed a significant weather shift on Sunday, with intermittent to moderate rainfall affecting lower regions and substantial snowfall in the upper reaches of Chamba, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti districts. This climatic activity has prompted immediate travel advisories and operational changes across the state.
Travel Restrictions and Safety Measures
Following the snowfall, authorities in Manali have implemented strict travel limitations. Tourists are now permitted to travel only up to Solang Nala, with further access restricted due to hazardous conditions. The iconic Atal Tunnel is partially open, allowing only 4x4 vehicles to pass through at a time. Police have temporarily halted all other vehicles, including two-wheelers, from proceeding towards Lahaul, strongly advising travellers to avoid non-essential journeys until conditions improve.
Impact on Tourism and Weather Forecast
The snowfall has intensified the cold across the region, much to the delight of tourism operators who are witnessing a rise in tourist numbers ahead of the traditional April season. However, the meteorological department has issued critical alerts for the coming days. An orange alert is in effect for hailstorm, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places in Shimla, Mandi, and Kullu districts on March 30. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Kangra, Chamba, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur districts.
Weather predictions indicate light to moderate rain or snow at many places across Himachal Pradesh on March 30, April 3, and April 4. Isolated light rain or snow is also expected on March 31, April 1, and April 2. A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect Northwest India starting from April 2, potentially bringing further precipitation and impacting travel plans.
