IMD Issues Heatwave Alert as Temperatures Soar Across Maharashtra
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather forecast, predicting a rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures across Maharashtra until Friday. This increase is accompanied by a high likelihood of heatwave conditions affecting various parts of the state, with temperatures already surpassing the 40°C mark in multiple regions.
Heatwave Conditions Expected in Key Regions
According to IMD officials, heatwave conditions are anticipated to develop in Vidarbha between April 15 and 18. Additionally, parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada may experience similar conditions on April 16 and 17. IMD scientist SD Sanap provided detailed insights, stating that temperatures are likely to remain in the range of 40-41°C over the next three to five days.
"Similar conditions are expected over the next three to five days, with temperatures reaching around 40-41°C. After that, a slight drop of 1-2 degrees is likely," Sanap explained. "The rise is due to an anti-cyclonic circulation over Maharashtra and south-central parts of the state."
Recorded High Temperatures and Heatwave Criteria
Sanap highlighted that several weather stations have already recorded elevated temperatures, including:
- Akola: 43°C
- Amravati: 42°C
- Malegaon: 41°C
- Parbhani: 41°C
He clarified that despite high absolute temperatures in Vidarbha, heatwave criteria are not always met because departures from normal must exceed 4.5 degrees. "In Vidarbha, normal temperatures are already high, so even 43°C may not qualify as a heatwave unless the deviation is significant. Conditions are, however, expected to meet heatwave criteria in the coming days," Sanap added.
District-Wise Forecast and Regional Variations
District-wise forecasts indicate diverse weather patterns across Maharashtra:
- Pune and surrounding ghat regions are expected to remain largely dry over the next five days.
- Districts like Sangli and Solapur may experience heatwave conditions in isolated pockets around April 15-16.
- Similar warnings have been issued for parts of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
In contrast, Konkan districts, including Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, are forecast to experience hot and humid conditions in isolated pockets between April 14 and 16. These regions will largely remain dry otherwise, with high humidity levels contributing to discomfort.
IMD's Broader Weather Predictions
The IMD has also indicated that hot and humid conditions are very likely over:
- Konkan and Goa during April 14-16
- Marathwada on April 14 and 15
- Madhya Maharashtra on April 17
Precautionary Measures Advised
With temperatures set to remain high and heatwave conditions likely in parts of the state, officials have strongly advised residents to take necessary precautions. Recommendations include:
- Avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun
- Staying hydrated
- Taking extra care during peak afternoon hours
This alert aims to ensure public safety and minimize health risks associated with extreme heat conditions.
