IMD Issues First Heatwave Alert of 2024 for Odisha Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has taken a significant step by issuing its first heatwave warning of the year, targeting the districts of Jharsuguda and Sambalpur in Odisha. This alert comes as a response to a steady increase in daytime temperatures observed across parts of the state over the past two days.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Recorded

On Friday, Jharsuguda district recorded the highest day temperature in the state, reaching a scorching 40.6 degrees Celsius. This marked the second consecutive day that the district surpassed the 40-degree Celsius threshold. The temperature rise was approximately six degrees Celsius above the normal seasonal average, highlighting the severity of the heat conditions.

On the previous day, Thursday, Jharsuguda had already experienced extreme heat with a maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius, setting a concerning precedent for the region.

Other Districts Also Experience High Heat

The heatwave is not isolated to Jharsuguda alone. Other districts in Odisha have also reported elevated temperatures:

  • Hirakud recorded the second-highest temperature at 40.2 degrees Celsius.
  • Sambalpur followed closely with 39.9 degrees Celsius.
  • Sundergarh reported a maximum of 39.5 degrees Celsius.

In the state capital, Bhubaneswar, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius, which is two notches above the normal range for this time of year.

IMD's Warning and Public Advisory

The IMD's heatwave warning for Saturday serves as a critical alert for residents in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur. Heatwaves pose serious health risks, including heatstroke and dehydration, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers.

Authorities are urging people to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. The issuance of this warning early in the year underscores the need for heightened awareness and preparedness as summer approaches.

This development marks a notable shift in weather patterns for Odisha, with temperatures rising significantly above seasonal norms. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and may issue further advisories if conditions persist or worsen.
