IMD Issues Rainfall Forecast for Multiple Maharashtra Regions

The India Meteorological Department has released a detailed weather forecast predicting isolated rainfall activity across several regions of Maharashtra over the coming days. According to meteorological experts, specific areas including Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha are likely to experience precipitation beginning Monday.

Scientific Explanation Behind the Rainfall Pattern

IMD scientist SD Sanap provided technical insights into the weather phenomenon, explaining that the expected rainfall results from the interaction between an upper-level trough and moisture incursion originating from the Bay of Bengal. "Rains are likely to be isolated. It is not going to be widespread or scattered," Sanap clarified, emphasizing that only limited locations within these regions will receive measurable precipitation.

Sanap elaborated further on the meteorological conditions: "For the last few days, easterlies have been dominating. In addition, a western disturbance, with an associated trough extending from west-central Uttar Pradesh to east Rajasthan, is likely to move towards central India. The interaction of this upper-level system with lower-level moisture from the Bay of Bengal may trigger some rainfall."

Detailed Regional Forecast Breakdown

The IMD has provided specific regional outlooks for the upcoming period:

  • February 23: Isolated rainfall is anticipated over south and north Madhya Maharashtra along with Marathwada, while most parts of Vidarbha and Konkan regions are expected to remain predominantly dry.
  • February 24: Rainfall activity may extend to include west and east Vidarbha, south Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, with north Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan largely experiencing dry conditions.
  • February 25: Precipitation is forecast to be confined mainly to parts of Vidarbha, with the remainder of Maharashtra transitioning to dry weather patterns.

Temperature Patterns and Cloud Observations

Meteorological observations indicate that cloud cover has already been detected over various parts of Maharashtra, including the Pune region, during the past two to three days. This cloud activity has coincided with a noticeable rise in minimum temperatures across affected areas.

Regarding temperature projections, the IMD indicates that minimum temperatures are not expected to undergo significant changes over the initial three-day period. However, a gradual decrease of approximately 2–4° Celsius is anticipated during the subsequent three days. In specific regions including Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, reduced night-time cloud cover following the rainfall episode could facilitate temperature declines.

Daytime temperatures, conversely, are projected to remain close to current levels for the immediate future, with no sharp declines expected in the short term according to meteorological assessments.
