IMD Weather Alert: Heavy Rains in South India

The India Meteorological Department has sounded a six-day weather alert for extensive regions of South India and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, predicting intense rainfall activity, thunderstorms, and dangerous sea conditions starting November 26th.

The weather warnings remain active until December 1st, affecting Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and the island territories. Maritime zones across both the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea are also under alert.

Regional Rainfall Forecast and Thunderstorm Activity

According to IMD predictions, Tamil Nadu will experience widespread rainfall between November 26 and 30, with the most intense conditions expected from November 28 to 30. The department has specifically warned about very heavy rainfall at isolated locations during this peak period.

Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive heavy showers on November 26, while Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema will see increased rainfall activity between November 29 and December 1.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands face particularly severe conditions with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted from November 26 to 29. The meteorological department expects peak intensity on November 26 and 27.

Thunderstorm activity will intensify across multiple regions. Tamil Nadu may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning from November 26 to 29, while Kerala and Mahe will witness similar conditions on November 26 and 27.

Coastal Warnings and Maritime Dangers

The IMD has issued serious warnings for fishermen and coastal communities as sea conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly. Multiple maritime zones will experience squally winds reaching 50-60 kmph, with gusts potentially hitting 75 kmph in some areas.

Specific warnings include the South Andaman Sea, Strait of Malacca, and Nicobar region experiencing winds of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph until November 28. The Southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, and Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coastline will see wind speeds escalate to 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph between November 28 and 30.

Fishermen operating in South Andhra Pradesh have been urgently advised to return to shore before November 27. Those in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been cautioned against deep-sea fishing operations due to the likelihood of rough sea conditions and powerful winds.
