IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Gurgaon, Forecasts Rain and Thunderstorms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Gurgaon, with the city expected to experience light rain and thunderstorms on Sunday. This weather activity is driven by a western disturbance affecting Haryana, bringing unstable conditions across the region.

Weather Conditions and Temperature Trends

On Saturday, Gurgaon saw partly cloudy skies. The maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 31.5 degrees Celsius. However, the minimum temperature could not be measured at the Gurgaon KVK station. At the NorthCap University weather station, the minimum temperature dropped to 17.5 degrees Celsius, down from 20.7 degrees the previous day. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature at that station increased by 1.3 degrees to settle at 33.2 degrees Celsius.

The IMD predicts that rainfall activity will begin at isolated locations starting March 15 and continue through March 20. The intensity and spatial spread of the rain are expected to increase significantly between March 18 and March 20.

Detailed Forecast and Impact

Under the influence of the western disturbance, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is anticipated at isolated places across Haryana from late Saturday night onward. Specific areas likely to be affected include:

  • Chandigarh, Panchkula, Yamunanagar, Hisar, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Sonipat, Charkhi Dadri, Jhajjar, Mahendragarh, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Nuh, Palwal, and Rewari. These regions may see light rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph on Sunday.
  • Districts such as Kurukshetra, Ambala, Karnal, Kaithal, Panipat, and Jind could experience more severe conditions, including thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph, and hail at a few places.

The rainfall and increased cloud cover are expected to help moderate temperatures. According to the weather department, the maximum temperature is likely to decrease by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next five days, providing some relief from the recent warmth.

Extended Weather Outlook

Another western disturbance is forecasted to impact northwest India from the night of March 17, potentially prolonging the spell of unstable weather. This system may bring additional thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, along with hail at isolated places on Sunday and Monday.

After March 16, thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph are likely to persist across various parts of Haryana. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather alerts and take necessary precautions during this period of active weather.
