The winter chill made a dramatic return to Indore as temperatures took a sharp plunge on Sunday, bringing back the biting cold that residents had been hoping was behind them. The city recorded a minimum temperature of just 9 degrees Celsius, marking a significant drop that has left people reaching for their warmest clothing.
Weather Conditions and Temperature Details
Sunday morning proved particularly chilly for Indore residents, with the mercury hovering around 15 degrees Celsius at daybreak. The maximum temperature for the day was recorded at 26.6 degrees Celsius, creating a noticeable contrast between day and night conditions. Despite clear skies and bright sunlight throughout the day, cold winds persisted at approximately 12 km/hour, reducing the warming effect of the sun.
Morning commuters faced additional challenges as early morning fog reduced visibility to around 1800 meters. The combination of low temperatures, cold winds, and reduced visibility made both mornings and evenings noticeably cold, prompting residents to bundle up in multiple layers of warm clothing.
Meteorological Explanation for the Sudden Chill
According to weather experts, multiple weather systems are responsible for the sudden temperature drop. Arun Sharma from the Bhopal Met centre explained that an active western disturbance over Pakistan, combined with cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and northward-moving cold winds, have intensified the chill across Indore and surrounding areas.
"Cyclonic storm Fengal is still present over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with a strong possibility of northward movement in the next 24 hours," Sharma stated. "Another cyclonic circulation is active over Punjab at heights of 1.5 and 3.1 kilometer. These systems, along with a western disturbance in the upper atmosphere, are influencing weather patterns over Madhya Pradesh."
Forecast and Safety Recommendations
The meteorological department has issued a yellow alert for cold wave conditions in several districts including Bhopal and Indore for the first two days of the forecast period. Sharma confirmed that no significant rainfall is expected for the next five days, but temperatures are likely to remain nearly steady over the next three to four days with a slight decrease possible afterward.
Residents are advised to wear warm clothing and follow instructions from the weather centre to stay safe during this cold spell. The recent temperature drop is particularly notable because the city had experienced a brief rise in both day and night temperatures over the past week before this sudden change.
The current cold wave follows an earlier spell of intense cold accompanied by icy winds that Indore witnessed from November 6 to 22. Weather patterns indicate that winter has firmly established its presence in the region, with residents needing to prepare for continued cold conditions in the coming days.
