Iran Raises Alarm at UN Over Alleged Assassination Plots Against Senior Leadership

In a significant diplomatic move, Iran has officially alerted the United Nations regarding disturbing media reports that suggest the United States and Israel are planning to assassinate high-ranking Iranian officials. The targeted individuals reportedly include Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, according to a detailed report by Press TV.

Formal Complaint Lodged with UN Security Council

Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, expressed profound concern over these alleged assassination plots in an official letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the Security Council on Thursday. The ambassador highlighted that the reports indicate a deliberate operational framework aimed at eliminating Iran's top political figures.

"I draw the immediate attention of Your Excellency and the members of the Security Council to the reports published in the media," Iravani stated. "These reports indicate that the United States and the Israeli regime have identified and designated high-ranking officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, Mr. Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, as assassination targets. The reports describe any suspension of such plans as merely temporary."

Violations of International Law and UN Charter

Ambassador Iravani emphasized that such policies constitute a serious breach of peremptory rules of international law. He argued that the conditional nature of the alleged suspension confirms that the threat remains real, deliberate, and ongoing. The ambassador condemned any attempts to normalize the assassination of high-ranking government officials, labeling it as state terrorism that sets a dangerous precedent and poses a severe threat to international peace and security.

"Assassinating high-ranking officials of a sovereign UN member state is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and a breach of international human rights law," Iravani asserted. "Any attack on their lives would undermine the foundations of peaceful international relations."

Protest Against Regional Allies

In separate communications, Iravani issued strong protests to the United Nations against Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. He accused these nations of allowing their territory and airspace to be used by the United States and Israel to carry out attacks on Iranian soil. The ambassador called on these states to prevent any further use of their territories against Iran, while reserving Tehran's legitimate right to take all necessary measures, including self-defence, to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Escalating Regional Tensions

These developments unfold amidst escalating tensions in the US-Israel and Iran conflict, now entering its fourth week. Earlier, US President Trump indicated a temporary thaw in operations against Iran, mentioning that Iran had requested a seven-day pause on American strikes targeting its energy infrastructure. However, he extended this window to ten days until April 6, yet combined US-Israel strikes reportedly continue.

Simultaneously, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the launch of the 83rd wave of Operation True Promise 4 in the early hours of Friday. This operation targeted key American and Israeli military installations across the region using advanced missiles and drones, highlighting the volatile and rapidly deteriorating security situation in the Middle East.
