Iran Appoints IRGC Veteran as New Security Chief Amid Regional Turmoil
In a significant leadership reshuffle, Iran has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as the new chief of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC). This move comes as the country grapples with escalating conflicts in West Asia and follows the recent death of his predecessor, Ali Larijani, in an Israeli airstrike.
Zolghadr's Extensive Background in Security and Politics
Zolghadr currently serves as the Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council, a crucial advisory body to Iran's supreme leadership. His career spans decades, with numerous senior roles in Iran's political and security apparatus. Previously, he held the position of deputy interior minister for security affairs during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's presidency and later worked in the judiciary as deputy for strategic, societal security, and crime prevention affairs.
Context of Appointment Amid Regional Escalation
The appointment occurs against a backdrop of intensifying fighting in West Asia, which has already claimed the lives of several high-ranking Iranian officials. Ali Larijani, a powerful figure in the Islamic Republic, was killed in an Israeli strike last week. His death followed closely after Israel's elimination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, marking one of the conflict's most significant casualties.
Just 24 hours after US-Israel airstrikes that also killed IRGC commander Mohammad Pakpour, Larijani delivered a defiant message on state television. He accused America and Israel of setting "the heart of the Iranian nation ablaze" and vowed retaliation, stating, "We will burn their hearts. We will make the Zionist criminals and the shameless Americans regret their actions."

Larijani had been at the forefront of Iran's response to what is described as the country's biggest crisis since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Following Khamenei's death, he played a pivotal role alongside a three-member transitional council that assumed governance during the turmoil.
