Baqaei emphasized that the attack occurred on March 4, when the IRIS Dena was torpedoed and sunk by a US submarine approximately 40 nautical miles off the coast of Galle, Sri Lanka. He condemned the action as a "war crime" and a violation of international laws, including the Geneva Convention and UN resolutions. In his post, he noted that the warship had been officially invited by the Indian Navy for a joint naval exercise and port visit, making the incident particularly contentious.

The IRIS Dena sank south of Sri Lanka after being struck by a torpedo, with the location reported as about 20 nautical miles west of Galle.
