Iran Escalates Threats Against US Tech Firms in Middle East
In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Iran issued a severe warning on Friday, declaring that all information and communication technology (ICT) companies in the region with American shareholders remain potential targets. This announcement came just a day after reports surfaced of an alleged Iranian strike damaging an Amazon facility in Bahrain.
Direct Threat to Power Plants and Tech Infrastructure
The warning was delivered via a video message from Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters spokesman. He stated, "Should the US proceed with its threats concerning Iran's power plant facilities, the following retaliatory measures shall be promptly enacted. All power plants, energy infrastructure, and information and communication technology of the Zionist regime, and all similar companies in the region that have American shareholders, shall face complete and utter annihilation."
The video prominently displayed text asserting, "Nothing is hidden from our sight, though hidden by Google." It then highlighted specific targets, including the location of Stargate in the United Arab Emirates, described as an artificial intelligence computing cluster. Additionally, the video showed photographs of American CEOs from major partner firms involved in the project, such as Nvidia, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs.
Reported Attack on Amazon's Bahrain Operations
According to a report by the Financial Times on Thursday, Amazon’s cloud operations in Bahrain suffered damage following an Iranian strike. Bahrain’s interior ministry confirmed that civil defence teams were actively "extinguishing a fire in a facility of a company as a result of the Iranian aggression." This incident underscores the tangible risks faced by multinational corporations operating in the region.
Last month, Amazon had already acknowledged that its cloud division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), experienced disruptions in Bahrain due to the ongoing conflict, highlighting the persistent vulnerability of critical digital infrastructure.
Broader Context of Iranian Threats
This latest development follows earlier threats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), which had warned of targeting US companies operating in the Middle East, including tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Meta. The warning, similar to one issued in March, was directed at 18 US firms spanning technology and finance sectors.
In a message posted on Telegram, the IRGC accused these companies of acting as spies for the US government and assisting in carrying out strikes. The message elaborated, "since the main element in designing and tracking terror targets are American ICT and AI companies… from now on the main institutions effective in terrorist operations will be our legitimate targets."
The situation reflects a dangerous convergence of geopolitical strife and cybersecurity threats, with Iran explicitly linking its retaliatory actions to US policies and corporate involvement. As tensions simmer, the global tech industry faces heightened risks in one of the world's most volatile regions.
