Land Subsidence Crisis Hits Jharia: Over 12 Homes Develop Cracks, Families Flee in Panic
In a alarming development, cracks have appeared on the walls of more than twelve houses in the Dharmanagar locality of Chouthai Kulhi area, situated along the Dhanbad-Sindri Main Road in Jharia. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has triggered widespread panic among residents, leading to immediate evacuations as the fissures continued to widen with each passing hour.
Historical Mining Zone Suspected as Root Cause
Local residents revealed that Dharmanagar was once part of an old mining zone, with families having resided there for nearly five decades. The primary suspect behind the emerging cracks is the hollow underground left by past mining activities, indicating a potential recurrence of land subsidence. This geological instability poses a severe threat to the structural integrity of homes and the safety of inhabitants.
Officials confirmed that ten houses have been severely impacted, with cracks not only appearing on building walls but also developing on the ground itself. The situation has escalated concerns about further deterioration and possible accidents.
Political and Administrative Response
A high-level team, including Jharia MLA Ragini Singh, Dhanbad Mayor Sanjeev Singh, Jharia Circle Officer Manoj Kumar, and officials from Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), visited Dharmanagar to assess the crisis. During the inspection, affected families expressed significant anger towards the administration and BCCL management, alleging negligence in addressing long-standing subsidence risks.
Public representatives urgently called on BCCL officials to immediately relocate the affected families to safer locations. In response, authorities assured that temporary rehabilitation would be arranged at Belgaria township to provide immediate relief.
Accountability and Future Precautions
MLA Ragini Singh issued a stern warning, stating, "The district administration and BCCL will be held accountable if an accident occurs in the near future." This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for prompt action to prevent potential disasters.
