Kannadiga Helpline Rescues 630 Stranded Tourists in UAE Amid West Asia Conflict
In the midst of the escalating West Asia conflict, the Kannadiga Helpline has proven to be a crucial lifeline for Kannada-speaking tourists stranded in the United Arab Emirates. This initiative has successfully facilitated the safe return of 630 individuals to India, showcasing remarkable humanitarian efforts during a time of international crisis.
Reactivated for Crisis Response
Originally established to assist Kannadigas during emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic and floods, the helpline was swiftly reactivated in response to the ongoing war in West Asia. Under the leadership of NRI entrepreneur Ronald Colaco and coordinated by Hidayath Addoor, over 30 Kannada organisations across the UAE united to provide comprehensive relief to stranded passengers.
The primary objective was ensuring safe repatriation. According to Addoor, the helpline offered assistance with booking alternative flights and safely repatriating individuals. Special care was extended to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, and those who were sick, ensuring their needs were prioritized.
Extensive On-Ground Relief Efforts
Beyond facilitating returns, the team engaged in significant on-ground relief work. More than 235 people received free food and accommodation at various locations in the UAE, with support from individuals like Praveen Shetty, Isaac Haji, and Dheeraj Jain. During the initial crisis phase, the distribution included 1,180 meals and 70 food kits, addressing immediate hunger and sustenance needs.
Healthcare and Financial Support
Healthcare was a key focus area, with 71 individuals undergoing free health screenings and 32 others provided with necessary medicines. Additionally, 22 ailing individuals referred by the Indian Consulate received financial assistance funded by Colaco, highlighting the initiative's comprehensive approach to well-being.
Logistical Assistance and Community Participation
To ensure smooth travel, private transport was arranged to help stranded passengers reach airports in Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Abu Dhabi. The initiative saw active participation from numerous Kannada and community organisations across the UAE, demonstrating strong community solidarity.
Recognition and Felicitation
In recognition of their selfless service, Colaco hosted an ‘Iftar Harmony Meet’ at his residence, where members monitoring the helpline were felicitated. This event celebrated the team's dedication and the positive impact of their efforts in providing critical support during a challenging time.
