Kanpur DM Probes Mass Fish Death in Ganga

The district administration in Kanpur has launched an investigation into the mass death of thousands of fish in the Ganga River near Wajidpur in Jajmau. District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh has constituted a three-member committee to ascertain the cause of the incident.

Committee Collects Water Samples

On Sunday, members of the committee collected water samples from seven locations along the river in and around the affected area for laboratory analysis. The committee comprises the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Sadar), the Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department, and the Regional Officer of the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board.

The team visited the Jajmau stretch of the Ganga, where large numbers of dead fish were found floating on Saturday, and examined possible reasons behind the incident.

“We assessed all possible causes and collected water samples from seven locations. The samples are being sent to a laboratory for testing. Further action will be taken after the investigation report is received,” the SDM said.

Incident Raises Concerns

The incident came to light on Saturday, when thousands of dead fish were spotted in the river near Jajmau, raising concerns among local residents. Several residents have expressed apprehension that chemical contamination of the river water may have caused the fish deaths.

Authorities are awaiting the laboratory results to determine the exact cause and will take appropriate measures based on the findings.
