Kanpur Sizzles as Mercury Soars to 39°C, IMD Predicts Further Rise to 42°C
Kanpur Heatwave: Temperature Hits 39°C, May Reach 42°C

Kanpur Gripped by Intense Heatwave Conditions

Kanpur witnessed a significant temperature surge on Thursday, with the mercury climbing to 39 degrees Celsius, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This reading marked a notable 0.8 degrees above the normal seasonal average for the city. The minimum temperature remained at 18.8 degrees Celsius, creating a substantial daily temperature variation that contributed to the uncomfortable conditions.

Official Weather Readings and Wind Patterns

According to data from the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology observatory, Kanpur city recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the Air Force meteorological department reported an even higher reading of 41.2 degrees Celsius. These measurements were exacerbated by north-westerly winds blowing at approximately 3 kilometers per hour, which intensified the heatwave-like situation throughout the urban area.

IMD Forecast Predicts Escalating Temperatures

The IMD has issued a concerning forecast indicating that temperatures will continue to rise over the next two days. Meteorological experts anticipate an increase of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, potentially pushing the mercury to reach 42 degrees Celsius. This prediction has raised alarms among residents and authorities about the developing heatwave conditions.

Impact on Daily Life and Public Behavior

The city experienced bright sunshine from early morning, with residents beginning to feel the scorching heat by 9 AM. The CSA weather department confirmed over 10 hours of sunshine on Thursday, which played a significant role in driving up temperatures.

Several notable impacts on daily life included:

  • Legal professionals considering earlier court appearances to avoid peak afternoon heat
  • Major markets and typically busy roads appearing unusually deserted
  • Elderly residents using umbrellas, scarves, or thin towels for protection when venturing outside
  • School children rushing home immediately after classes rather than spending time outdoors

While younger residents turned to cold drinks for relief, older citizens preferred traditional beverages such as bael (wood apple) juice, jaljeera, and aam panna to combat the intense heat.

Expert Analysis and Safety Recommendations

S. Sunil Pandey, a weather expert at CSA University, explained that the IMD has already indicated a steady temperature increase in coming days. He noted that while patches of clouds may appear, there is no possibility of rainfall to provide relief.

"Winds from the Himalayan region have weakened, while hot westerly winds from desert areas are driving up temperatures and creating heatwave-like conditions," Pandey stated.

He further reported that relative humidity remained relatively low at 61%, resulting in dry and particularly uncomfortable weather conditions. Pandey strongly advised citizens to avoid outdoor activities during noon and afternoon hours whenever possible.

For unavoidable outdoor exposure, he recommended these essential precautions:

  1. Cover exposed skin with appropriate clothing
  2. Wear caps or scarves for head protection
  3. Carry sufficient water to maintain hydration
  4. Seek shade whenever possible during peak heat hours

The combination of rising temperatures, dry conditions, and limited wind relief has created challenging circumstances for Kanpur residents, with authorities urging caution until weather patterns shift.
