In a proactive conservation effort, the authorities at Karnala Bird Sanctuary in Navi Mumbai have constructed five artificial lakes to ensure adequate water supply for the sanctuary's diverse wildlife amidst the ongoing heat wave. These small pools, strategically built at five different locations within the sanctuary over the past month, are being filled using water tankers to address the seasonal scarcity of water during the summer months.
Funding and Implementation Details
The construction of these artificial lakes was made possible through grants from the district planning and development committee fund. To sustain the water supply until the arrival of the monsoon rains, the sanctuary has appointed a dedicated water tanker supply contractor. This initiative aims to provide a reliable source of hydration for the sanctuary's inhabitants throughout the dry season.

Located approximately 15 kilometers from Panvel along the Mumbai-Goa highway, Karnala Bird Sanctuary is home to a vibrant ecosystem. It houses between 134 and 145 species of birds and 23 types of wild animals, including various reptiles. The creation of these artificial lakes is expected to significantly benefit this diverse wildlife by mitigating the impacts of the heat wave and ensuring their well-being during the challenging summer period.
