The India Meteorological Department has forecast snowfall in Kashmir starting Thursday. This prediction brings hope for an end to a prolonged dry spell in the region.
IMD Issues Weather Warnings for Kashmir
Srinagar's IMD branch issued a warning on Monday. It stated that landslides, mudslides, and gusty winds might occur at vulnerable places. These conditions could disrupt air and surface transport.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and other major roads in middle and higher reaches of the Union Territory may face closures. The department advised people to avoid sloppy and avalanche-prone areas.
Locals Await Snowfall Amid Freezing Temperatures
Across Kashmir, locals are eagerly waiting for snowfall. This winter has remained largely dry so far. Temperatures continue to plunge below zero degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.7 degrees Celsius. Sonamarg saw an even lower temperature of minus 8.9 degrees. The cold weather persists without significant snowfall.
Western Disturbances to Bring Snowfall
Two western disturbances in quick succession will likely affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas. The first disturbance is expected from January 22 to January 24. The second will follow from January 26 to January 28.
The meteorological department provided details about the expected weather. Heavy snowfall accompanied by rainfall is likely at few places during these periods. The main activity will occur on January 23 and January 27.
Light to moderate snowfall and rainfall may be witnessed across a widespread area. This weather pattern marks a significant change from recent dry conditions.
Changing Snowfall Patterns in Kashmir
Except for the winters of 2020 and 2021, December and January have remained dry since 2018. This trend highlights a shift in seasonal weather patterns.
Sunil Dhar, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences at Jammu Central University, commented on this change. He said seasonal snowfall has shifted by nearly a month. This observation points to broader climatic variations affecting the region.
The upcoming snowfall offers relief from the dry spell. Residents and authorities prepare for potential disruptions while welcoming the moisture.
