Kerala CM Urges Caution as IMD Declares Heatwave in Three Districts

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared a heatwave in three districts of Kerala, prompting authorities to urge the public to exercise caution amid high temperatures and humidity.

Health Risks and Precautions

Officials have warned that rising temperatures could lead to serious health complications and even pose a threat to life if precautions are not followed. The Chief Minister stated that authorities have advised people to avoid stepping out between 11 am and 3 pm, when exposure to direct sunlight is at its peak. Residents have been urged to treat this period as a 'self-imposed lockdown' and avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor work.

Ventilation and Hydration

Ensuring proper ventilation in homes and workplaces has also been emphasized. Health experts recommend drinking plenty of water even if not thirsty. The public has been asked to consume nutritious food and wear light-colored, loose cotton clothing. The use of umbrellas, footwear, and sunglasses has been strongly advised while stepping outdoors.

Vulnerable Groups

Special caution has been urged for the elderly, children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and individuals suffering from conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and skin disorders. Outdoor gatherings, cultural and sports activities between 11 am and 3 pm are discouraged.

Government Measures

The Chief Minister said the government has initiated several measures to mitigate the impact of the heatwave. Working hours have been rescheduled by the labor department to avoid daytime outdoor work, and employment guarantee scheme activities have been suspended during peak hours. Traffic police personnel have been instructed to ensure access to drinking water and shade, along with relaxations in uniform requirements.

Healthcare and Community Support

Healthcare facilities have been equipped with first-aid systems to handle heatstroke cases. Local bodies, self-help groups, voluntary organizations, and traders have been encouraged to set up public drinking water kiosks and shaded rest areas for travelers. Authorities have advised that anyone experiencing fatigue or symptoms of heatstroke should seek immediate medical attention.

Emergency Response

In case of emergencies, individuals are urged to move affected persons to shaded areas, cool their bodies, and arrange prompt medical care. Emphasizing collective responsibility, the Chief Minister said that the state can overcome the harsh summer conditions through coordinated efforts and mutual support.

Authorities have also called for care towards animals, urging the public to ensure access to drinking water and shade for pets and stray animals.
