Kerala Heatwave: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for 12 Districts

Kerala Braces for Intensifying Heatwave as IMD Issues Temperature Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm over escalating heat conditions across Kerala, issuing a stern warning for a significant 2-3 degree Celsius rise in maximum temperatures that is expected to persist until Thursday. This meteorological advisory comes as the state grapples with already elevated mercury levels, prompting concerns about public health and daily life disruptions.

Yellow Alert Activated for Twelve Districts

A formal yellow alert has been officially declared for maximum temperatures in twelve key districts of Kerala, highlighting the severity of the impending heatwave. The IMD's forecast indicates that specific locations in Kollam and Palakkad are likely to experience temperatures hovering around 38°C, while Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur can expect readings of approximately 37°C. Additionally, Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, and Kasaragod are projected to see temperatures reach 36°C during this period.

Hot and humid weather conditions are very likely to prevail across these districts over the next two days, with the exception of hilly areas which may offer some respite. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours.

Recent Temperature Surges Documented

Recent data from Tuesday reveals concerning temperature increases that underscore the IMD's warnings. Punalur recorded a substantial 2.2°C rise, reaching a scorching 38.6°C with a relative humidity of 69%, while Thiruvananthapuram saw temperatures climb to 36.5°C with 65% humidity. Other notable readings include Palakkad at 38.2°C and Kannur airport registering 37.4°C.

Several locations experienced mercury levels of 36.5°C, representing a significant 1.5°C increase above normal seasonal expectations. This includes areas such as Cial and Kottayam, where temperatures have been appreciably above normal alongside Kozhikode and Kollam, despite no large-scale change in maximum temperature across Kerala overall.

Thunderstorm Activity Forecast for Weekend

In a contrasting weather development, the IMD has predicted that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places over Kerala on Friday and Saturday. This potential shift in weather patterns may provide temporary relief from the heatwave conditions, though residents should remain vigilant for sudden weather changes.

The simultaneous occurrence of heat alerts and thunderstorm warnings creates a complex meteorological scenario for Kerala, requiring citizens to prepare for both extreme heat and potential electrical storms in the coming days.
