Kolkata Swelters Under Intensifying Heat and Humidity
The city of Kolkata faced a significant escalation in temperatures on Tuesday, with the mercury climbing sharply and oppressive humidity exacerbating the heat factor. Despite expectations of further temperature increases, meteorological officials have reassured residents that heat wave-like conditions are not anticipated for Kolkata itself.
Temperature Spike and Humidity Concerns
The maximum temperature in Kolkata surged from 34.6 degrees Celsius on Monday to 35.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. According to HR Biswas, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, the mercury is projected to rise even higher, potentially reaching between 36 and 37 degrees by Wednesday. Although these temperatures remain below the normal seasonal mark, the exceptionally high humidity levels are significantly elevating the discomfort index for residents.
"We expect the maximum temperature to shoot up further and stand between 36 and 37 degrees by Wednesday. Even as the mercury is still below normal mark, it is the high humidity which is pushing up the discomfort level," emphasized Biswas.
Regional Heat Wave Conditions and Forecasted Relief
While Kolkata may avoid a formal heat wave, some western districts of the region are already grappling with heat wave-like conditions. The meteorological office has indicated a potential respite from the scorching weather, with the possibility of rainfall arriving by Saturday. This forecast offers a glimmer of hope for relief from the ongoing heat and humidity.
The combination of rising temperatures and stifling humidity has created challenging conditions for daily life in Kolkata. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours.
