Kolkata Swelters Under Season's Highest Temperature, Thunderstorms on Horizon
Kolkata endured a blistering Saturday as the mercury soared to a scorching 36.1°C, marking the highest maximum temperature recorded so far this season. Despite the oppressive heat, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast a shift in weather patterns, predicting cloudy conditions and the likelihood of thunderstorms striking the city over the upcoming five days.
Intense Heat and High Real Feel Temperature
Residents found no respite from the sweltering conditions, with a private weather forecasting service reporting that the real feel temperature skyrocketed to an intense 43.8°C. Kolkatans were seen scurrying for cover as the combination of high temperatures and significant moisture levels created a stifling environment across most parts of south Bengal.
The minimum temperature also climbed by a degree, reaching 27.6°C on Saturday. A weather scientist explained, "Since there is no protective system against the sun, temperatures have been steadily rising over the past five days, leading to hot and humid conditions throughout the region."
Weather Transition: From Heat to Thunderstorms
According to the RMC, conditions are set to become favourable for thunderstorm activity following this scorching spell. While Sunday and Monday may remain partly cloudy, the city and its surrounding districts could experience 'intense thunderstorms' between Tuesday and Thursday.
Sourish Bandyopadhyay, a weather scientist at RMC, detailed the forecast: "We anticipate a slow drop in temperature as cloud cover develops from Sunday, potentially causing sporadic rain in and around Kolkata due to localized conditions—clouds triggered by heating and moisture incursion, which is typical in summer. However, the chances of more severe thunderstorms will increase over the subsequent three days."
Meteorological Factors Driving the Change
Bandyopadhyay further elaborated on the atmospheric dynamics: "We expect a trough and a cyclonic circulation to form near Bengal, which will lead to cloud formation and thunderstorms. Additionally, there will be an indirect impact from a powerful western disturbance, raising the likelihood of thunderstorms not only in Kolkata but across south Bengal."
This western disturbance is also predicted to cause rainfall, along with hailstorms and snowfall, in some western and northern states of India, indicating a broader weather shift affecting multiple regions.
Implications for Kolkata Residents
The forecasted thunderstorms offer a potential respite from the ongoing heatwave, but they also bring concerns about severe weather impacts. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather alerts and prepare for possible disruptions due to intense rainfall and thunderstorm activity.
As Kolkata navigates this transition from extreme heat to stormy conditions, the focus remains on monitoring these developments closely to ensure public safety and minimize any adverse effects on daily life.
