Kolkata Anticipates First Significant Rainfall in Nearly Four Months

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata has issued a forecast predicting light to moderate rainfall for the city on Tuesday. This potential weather event would mark the first substantial rainy day after an extended dry period of close to four months, bringing much-needed relief from the prolonged absence of precipitation.

Weather Systems Converge to Increase Rain Probability

Meteorologists attribute the heightened chance of rainfall to a combination of atmospheric conditions. Warm southerly and south-easterly winds are currently transporting significant moisture from the sea into the landmass. Simultaneously, a trough line extending from Gangetic Bengal to north coastal Andhra Pradesh is further amplifying the likelihood of precipitation across the region.

"We are estimating approximately a 60% probability of rain occurring in Kolkata on Tuesday," stated HR Biswas, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata. "Additionally, thunderstorms are likely in the neighboring districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and East and West Midnapore. The moist wind currents in the lower atmospheric system are actively injecting humidity from the sea, creating favorable conditions."

Recent Temperature Trends and Expected Impact

Recent temperature readings have shown a slight upward trend. On Monday, the maximum temperature reached 31.2°C, which is 0.7 degrees above the normal seasonal average. The minimum temperature crossed the 20°C threshold on Sunday, registering at 20.6°C on Monday, a figure 1.1 notches higher than usual.

Despite the anticipated rainfall, meteorological officials have indicated that the precipitation is not expected to significantly influence mercury levels. The rain is projected to provide temporary respite without causing a dramatic drop in temperatures, maintaining the overall warm conditions prevalent in the area.

Residents and authorities are advised to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins as the situation develops. The potential rainfall after such a prolonged dry spell is a notable meteorological event for the region, highlighting shifting weather patterns and atmospheric dynamics.
