Kolkata Weather Alert: Thunderstorms and Squally Winds Predicted This Weekend

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Kolkata and multiple districts across West Bengal, forecasting spells of thundershowers over the next two days. Enhanced thunderstorm activities are expected between Friday and Saturday, bringing potential disruptions and safety concerns.

Meteorological Factors Driving the Stormy Weather

According to Met officials, a combination of moisture incursion, atmospheric heating, and favorable wind patterns will trigger these nor'wester spells. Meteorologist HR Biswas, head at IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, stated, "We also expect squally wind to sweep across the city between Friday and Saturday." This prediction follows a powerful nor'wester that hit Kolkata last Sunday night, which recorded 17.6 mm of rainfall and featured the season's first squall with wind speeds reaching 72 kmph, uprooting several trees.

Impact on Kolkata and Surrounding Districts

The forecast indicates that many districts, including neighbouring Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, and other south Bengal areas, are likely to experience the thundershower. Gusty winds with speeds ranging between 50 and 70 kmph are anticipated, and Met officials have not ruled out the possibility of similar gusty conditions during the predicted nor'wester spells. Residents are advised to take precautions, such as securing loose objects and avoiding outdoor activities during peak storm hours.

Temperature Trends and Post-Storm Outlook

On Thursday, Kolkata's maximum temperature rose slightly to 32.6°C, which remains 1.6 notches below the normal average for this time of year. The minimum temperature was recorded at 24.7°C, a degree above normal. Following the thundershowers, the mercury is set to dip again, providing some relief from the heat but potentially leading to cooler conditions in the aftermath of the storms.
