Kolkata Shivers as Temperature Plummets to 14.4°C
The city of Kolkata experienced a distinct chill on Saturday as the minimum temperature dropped by a degree to settle at 14.4° Celsius. This significant dip in mercury levels has been attributed to the influx of northwesterly winds flowing at a fair speed across the region.
Met Office Forecasts Persistent Chill
According to the Meteorological Department, the chilly conditions are expected to persist for at least the next 48 hours. Deputy Director General of Meteorology HR Biswas provided detailed insights into the weather pattern, stating that the northwesterly winds are responsible for the sustained cold spell.
"Since the chilly northwesterly is flowing in, the chill will continue for the next two to three days. The mercury will start crawling up from Monday. It will be a gradual climb. We can expect the minimum to touch 16°C by Thursday," explained Biswas.
Temperature Trends and Projections
While Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 26.2°C on Saturday, forecasts indicate a slight decline to 26°C on Sunday. The minimum temperature is also projected to slide marginally to 14°C during this period.
The weather office emphasizes that this cooling trend is temporary, with temperatures expected to begin a gradual recovery starting Monday. By Thursday, residents can anticipate the minimum temperature rising to approximately 16°C, providing some relief from the current chill.
Weather Patterns and Regional Impact
The current weather phenomenon highlights the influence of seasonal wind patterns on Kolkata's climate. The northwesterly winds, known for bringing cooler air from northern regions, have created conditions that are unusually chilly for this time of year.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring the situation to provide accurate updates as the temperature progression unfolds over the coming days.
