LDA Launches Biodiversity Mapping Project for CG City Wetland in Lucknow

The Lucknow Development Authority will start a detailed biodiversity mapping project at the CG City wetland. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive catalogue of all plant and animal life in the area.

Decision Taken During Review Meeting

LDA vice-chairperson Prathamesh Kumar chaired a review meeting on Wednesday. During this meeting, officials finalized the plan for the biodiversity mapping exercise. Kumar emphasized the need for a systematic approach to support future conservation work.

Scope of the Documentation Effort

The mapping will cover a wide range of biological elements present in the wetland. Officials plan to document:

  • All tree species growing in the area
  • Various plant types found throughout the wetland
  • Bird populations including both resident and migratory species
  • Aquatic life inhabiting the water bodies
  • Other organisms that contribute to the ecosystem

This 37-acre wetland sits behind the Ekana Cricket Stadium. It has developed into both an eco-tourism destination and a vital habitat for birds over time.

Ongoing Conservation Activities

Cleaning operations and water quality monitoring are already happening at the site. The Gomti Task Force and Turtle Survival Alliance provide support for these activities. Their work helps maintain the wetland's ecological health.

Boundary Demarcation to Prevent Encroachment

As part of the broader conservation plan, the LDA will clearly mark the wetland boundaries. Officials will examine revenue records to establish accurate property lines. Ground-level action will ensure proper demarcation that prevents future encroachment attempts.

Expert Deployment for Regular Monitoring

Prathamesh Kumar announced that two experts will join the conservation effort. The forest department will deploy these specialists to oversee various aspects of wetland management. Their regular responsibilities will include:

  1. Monitoring solid waste management practices
  2. Observing natural water flow patterns
  3. Supervising water purification processes
  4. Maintaining ecological balance in the wetland

Forest department officials received instructions to prepare a formal proposal for deploying these experts. Their presence will ensure continuous oversight of conservation activities.

The comprehensive biodiversity catalogue will serve as a valuable resource. It will guide future protection efforts for this important urban wetland ecosystem in Lucknow.
