Leopard Cub Successfully Rescued from Mhow Forest Area Near Choral Dam
A young leopard cub, estimated to be only 20 to 25 days old, was rescued from a roadside forest area adjacent to the Choral dam in Mhow tehsil on Saturday. The timely intervention by local authorities and forest officials ensured the vulnerable animal's safety and well-being.
Alert Villagers Prompt Swift Action
The rescue operation was initiated after vigilant passersby from a nearby village spotted the cub in the forest. They immediately alerted the Badgonda police station and the forest office in Mhow. A dedicated rescue team was swiftly assembled and deployed to the location, successfully retrieving the cub during the afternoon hours.
Forest Officials' Detailed Account of the Rescue
Mhow forest range officer Nayan Kumar provided comprehensive details regarding the incident. He explained, "The forest where the cub was discovered is situated near Jamkhurd village, which falls under the Naharkheda forest beat of the Mhow range. The cub is very young, likely separated from its mother while accompanying her through the dense woodland."
Officer Kumar elaborated on the cautious approach taken by the team, stating, "We anticipated that the mother leopard might be in the vicinity. Therefore, we maintained a hidden position approximately 100 meters away from the cub for about four hours, hoping the mother would return to claim her offspring. However, when no such reunion occurred, we made the decision to intervene to prevent any harm to the cub."
Immediate Care and Medical Attention
Concerned about the cub's health amidst the intense summer heat, the forest officials prioritized providing immediate nourishment. "We rescued the cub and administered milk to ensure it did not suffer from dehydration due to the scorching temperatures," Kumar added.
Following directives from senior officials, a thorough medical examination was conducted at the Mhow veterinary college. After receiving a favorable report from the veterinary doctor confirming the cub's stable condition, arrangements were made for its transfer to a more suitable facility.
Transfer to Van Vihar for Long-Term Rehabilitation
The leopard cub has been relocated to Van Vihar in Bhopal, where it will receive specialized care and attention. Officer Kumar confirmed, "The cub has been shifted to Van Vihar, where proper care and rehabilitation will be undertaken to ensure its healthy development and eventual well-being."
This rescue highlights the collaborative efforts between local communities, police, and forest departments in safeguarding wildlife, particularly vulnerable young animals in natural habitats.
