London Ambulance Arson Attack Investigated as Antisemitic Hate Crime
In a disturbing incident that has shaken the local community, four vehicles belonging to a Jewish community ambulance service were deliberately set on fire in the early hours of Monday in Golders Green, London. The British police have officially classified this act as an antisemitic hate crime, highlighting the severity of the attack and its targeted nature against the Jewish population.
Details of the Attack and Immediate Response
According to closed-circuit television footage reviewed by authorities, three individuals were seen approaching one of the ambulances and igniting it before fleeing the scene. Thick plumes of smoke billowed into the sky, captured in videos that quickly circulated on social media, showing the vehicles engulfed in flames and the smoke spreading across the residential area.
The London Fire Brigade responded with urgency, deploying six fire engines and approximately 40 firefighters to control the blaze. They reported that four ambulances sustained significant damage, with multiple cylinders exploding due to the intense heat. This caused windows to shatter in a nearby block of flats, though fortunately, no injuries have been reported as confirmed by the Associated Press.
Community Impact and Police Investigation
Police Superintendent Sarah Jackson, who oversees policing in the area, addressed the community concern, stating, "We know this incident will cause a great deal of community concern. Officers remain on scene to carry out urgent enquiries." She emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages, with authorities examining CCTV and online footage to identify the three suspects. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward, anonymously if preferred.
To reassure the local community, additional patrols have been deployed, and police are actively engaging with faith leaders. The incident occurred on Highfield Road around 1:45 AM local time, prompting some precautionary evacuations of nearby buildings, although no casualties occurred.
Background on the Targeted Organization
The targeted vehicles belong to Hatzola Northwest, a volunteer organization dedicated to providing emergency medical response services. This group plays a crucial role in supporting the Jewish community in London, making the attack particularly alarming. Shomrim, a neighbourhood watch group in Golders Green, reported hearing loud explosions early Monday, which they clarified were caused by oxygen tanks in the ambulances rather than bombs or explosive devices.
The Metropolitan Police continue their investigation, urging residents to avoid the area while inquiries are ongoing. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of hate crimes and the importance of community vigilance and support in such times.
