Madurai: The Madurai corporation has commenced cleaning operations for the Vaigai river in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season. Currently, the dry sections of the river are being cleared of accumulated waste, which had been dumped by nearby establishments and residents.
Reasons Behind the Cleaning Drive
Corporation officials stated that the initiative follows numerous complaints from local residents regarding the indiscriminate dumping and burning of waste along the riverbed. Such practices not only pollute the environment but also pose health risks and obstruct the natural flow of the river.
Legal Notices and Fines
In addition to clearing the waste, the corporation is issuing notices to all establishments situated near the river. These notices mandate proper waste segregation and responsible disposal. Failure to comply will result in fines and legal action against violators.
Establishments generating more than 100 kilograms of waste per day have been categorized as bulk waste generators. For such entities, the corporation charges a fee of Rs 1,268 per tonne of waste collected. This measure aims to encourage waste reduction and responsible management.
Public Participation and Reporting
The public is encouraged to report any instances of waste dumping by calling the helpline number 90039 90030 or via WhatsApp at 96001 12811. Additionally, complaints can be registered through the SmartMadurai app, which automatically notifies the concerned officials for prompt action.
This comprehensive approach by the Madurai corporation is expected to ensure a cleaner river and a healthier environment for all residents.
