Mexican Military Discloses Operation That Eliminated Notorious Drug Lord El Mencho
The Mexican military has publicly revealed the detailed account of the high-stakes operation that culminated in the death of Mexico's most wanted drug lord, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho. The leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel was killed during a dramatic raid in the town of Tapalpa, where he maintained a secret hideout with his mistress.
Tracking the Mistress to the Hideout
According to Mexico's Defense Secretary, General Ricardo Trevilla, intelligence agents first identified a man closely associated with one of El Mencho's girlfriends prior to the Sunday raid. This critical lead enabled authorities to track the girlfriend to a secluded resort compound in Tapalpa, where El Mencho and his heavily armed security team were located.
The military strategically waited for the girlfriend to depart the compound before initiating the assault, ensuring minimal civilian interference at the onset. However, the military has not disclosed the identity of the mistress nor confirmed whether she actively assisted in locating the cartel boss.
Violent Confrontation and Fatal Chase
Upon entering the compound, troops were met with immediate and intense gunfire from El Mencho's security detail, who were equipped with sophisticated weaponry, including two rocket launchers. The fierce firefight quickly escalated into a chaotic chase through the surrounding woods.
This pursuit resulted in the deaths of eight individuals at the scene: El Mencho himself, two of his bodyguards who were initially wounded and later succumbed to their injuries, and five others. The aftermath of the raid saw a brutal counteroffensive by the cartel, leading to a total death toll exceeding 50 people.
Significant Casualties in the Aftermath
Authorities reported that the casualties included:
- 25 Mexican soldiers and security officers
- 30 alleged cartel gunmen
- Several civilians caught in the crossfire, tragically including a pregnant woman
This highlights the severe and widespread impact of the operation on both combatants and innocent bystanders.
Political and International Context
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed she was notified of the operation early on Sunday. She explicitly stated that there were no U.S. boots on the ground, rejecting any claims of direct American military involvement beyond intelligence sharing.
El Mencho was previously married to Rosalinda González Valencia until their separation in 2018. Rosalinda had been incarcerated until last year, serving a two-year sentence for money laundering convictions linked to the cartel's operations.
The elimination of El Mencho marks a significant victory for Mexican authorities in their ongoing battle against drug cartels, though the high casualty count underscores the persistent violence and challenges in the region.
